Our lab uses cutting-edge computational and experimental approaches to better understand cellular development and human disease. We are an interdisciplinary team of experimental scientists, computational biologists, and clinician-scientists, and we are jointly affiliated with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Some of the exciting research projects in our lab include:
Understanding the molecular basis of therapeutic resistance in cancer
Unraveling the gene regulatory factors involved in cellular development
Development of computational methods to interpret high-dimensional and single-cell transcriptomics, proteomics, and epigenomics data
Excited to share our latest work in @NatureCancer to get a better understanding why relapsed T-ALL is so deadly and potential target strategies, led by Jason Xu and @changya1 with members of David Teachey, @junjyang, @CMullighan and many great colleagues. https://twtr.to/foS9o.
New from the Tan lab: CelloType is an end-to-end method for spatial omics data analysis that uses a deep neural network for concurrent object detection, segmentation and classification and performs with high accuracy on diverse datasets. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41592-024-02513-1?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=nmeth
Happy to share our newest work, CelloType, to improve segmentation and annotation of tissue spatial omics data. https://twtr.to/T0m76. CelloType performs simultaneous segmentation and structure annotation using a transformer-based model.
It’s that time of the year… Lab outing 2024!
On Thursday, May 23 at 12:00 pm ET, @cdktmw (an @NCIHTAN investigator) and @TheLizArmy (a @PECGSnetwork investigator & advocate) will discuss how the #CancerMoonshot is advancing #DataSharing during a #CancerMoonshotSeminar. https://www.cancer.gov/research/key-initiatives/moonshot-cancer-initiative/seminar-series #CMSSConvo
Talking about making a big splash😀😂🤣
👏Advocacy in Action-We had a great day in Harrisburg advocating for research funds that help us do important work like finding new targeted therapies to help kiddos with leukemia. Kudos to Danika Makowski from @KaiTanLab1 for joining us to meet with lawmakers like @senbartolotta
Now online! Mapping the cellular biogeography of human bone marrow niches using single-cell transcriptomics and proteomic imaging
Excited to share the first spatially resolved multiomics atlas for human bone marrow, published today in @CellCellPress. https://twtr.to/cJ099. Wonderful collaborations with Ling Qin @LingQin6, Charles Nelson, Martin Carroll, Ivan Maillard, Vinohd Pillai @pillai_vinodh labs!
I hope you’ll join the @NCI_CSSI webinar, “Finding Neighborhoods in the Land of #SpatialOmics.” Dr. Kai Tan will discuss CytoCommunity, his cutting-edge technology for the identification of condition-specific cellular clusters in tissue. https://datascience.cancer.gov/news-events/events/finding-neighborhoods-land-spatial-omics @KaiTanLab1
Interested in understanding tissue cellular architecture changes in disease and development with spatial omics data? check out our new method, CytoCommunity published in @naturemethods, https://twtr.to/Gyefw, https://twtr.to/AfDEQ.
Another bittersweet moment to send off Changya Chen @Changya1, a brilliant former postdoc, lab member and friend. Changya will continue his great science in his own lab at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College this Spring.
Happy holidays from the Tan lab! Wish you a peaceful and productive 2024!
Congratulations to a lab alum, Greg Chen, for being recognized in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. We are incredibly proud of his achievement.

Did you know that PA uses tobacco taxes to fund health-related research? We were delighted to highlight some truly transformational research being done by @kaitanlab1 in Harrisburg this morning. Thank you @RepBenninghoff for being a strong supporter of the PA Cancer Alliance.
It is bittersweet to send off Yang Ding @YangDing19, a brilliant physician scientist, lab member and friend. Yang will continue her great science and patient care in her own lab at John Hopkins School of Medicine this Fall.
Congratulations to the newly minted Dr. Shovik Bandyopadhyay! Job well done. We are all very pround of your achievement.
Shovik Bandyopadhyay @shovikb94 from the Tan lab @KaiTanLab1 defends tomorrow!!
As it draws to a close, we would like to highlight our group of summer interns at @CHOP_Research and @PennMedEVDCSO, Arianne Parvaresh-Rizi, Liya Mooradian, Harley Hernandez, Barera Ajaz. You are such a talent and dynamic quad! Thank you @_hubmap: https://hubmapconsortium.org/internship-program/
After some much needed calories and H2O, everyone is happy again.
Some friendly competition under hot summer sun! And the winner of egg toss is 🥁…
